Alemeda - FK IT
My boy hit me in the group chat to let me know my favorite record label signed an Ethiopian, so we’re riding high in Teddyville right now. Top Dawg’s latest signing Alemeda is the 3rd woman to join the label after SZA & Doechii and demonstrates the LA collective’s willingness to branch out in increasingly alternative spaces. Whether it’s SZA doing a song with Pheobe Bridgers on SOS, or Doechii doing… whatever the fuck Doechii feels like, it’s pretty cool to see from a label that initially started off as straightforward hip-hop. I love that there’s an Ethiopian girl out there making dope music who had a clear Radio Disney phase like I did in elementary school (Shoutout 1250 AM in Seattle for holding me down). These are some real catchy pop punk-tinged songs and I had a lot of fun listening to it. The cherry on top — she uses Amharic characters to spell out FK IT on the album cover — something that would make our mothers sigh, but puts a smile on my face. This could be Olivia Rodrigo for those of us who grew up with their clothes smelling like onions. Salute.
Nilüfer Yanya - My Method Actor
As much as I would love to claim that I’ve been here since day 1, I admit my first time hearing about her was all of the buzz surrounding her 3rd LP which came out last week. This record is mixed so damn well – highly recommend listening to this with headphones. There’s some cool callbacks to influences such as the Smashing Pumpkins coded “Like I Say (I Runaway).” The drums are great too – the title track has an interesting time signature reminiscent of later-period Radiohead. Very excited to see her at Brooklyn Steel on October 1st.

Oasis - (What’s the Story) Morning Glory
Since the whole craze with the Oasis reunion.. I decided to dust off the old albums and give them a proper listen again. After listening to all of them, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory is the one that will always stick with me the most.
I heard my first Oasis song while watching the OC (cheesy enough). It was “Champagne Supernova” – if you know, you know. I remember specifically thinking they sounded a little like the Beatles and then later learned that Liam is a huge Lennon fan (lol). After figuring out Champagne Supernova, I listened to the whole record from start to finish. I loved it; I love the way “Roll With It” leads into “Wonderwall”, which then leads to “Don’t Look Back in Anger” (my personal favorite). Once you head to the end of the album, the song that introduced me to the band closes out the album with a lovely tune you can hum for the rest of the day.
Magdalena Bay - mini mix vol. 3
I know they just released a new album but I l00o0o0o0o0ve this little beautiful 15 minute work of art. I love it so much that I am currently walking around my office singing a song from this record, “Top Dog”; it’s so fun. This 15 minute album reminds me of early Grimes when she was still using baby toys to create some of her background music (think the first Grimes album). Also as a bonus for my runners out there, this album is so fun to run to – giving little spurts of energy as the album progresses.
Grizzly Bear - Ready, Able
And my favorite stop motion music video as a treat <3
